John started in the 60s casting in bronze, but at that time they were solid casts made in a small foundry in London opposite Annely Juda Gallery in Tottenham Mews. His bronze sculptures come in editions of seven.

Bronze is a very exciting and durable material and has a great quality when finished correctly. If the surface is prepared properly before patinating the sculpture will end up with a glow when finished. Depending on the chemicals used the patina will take on different colours: green, brown, reddy- or orange-brown, blue, yellow, black, even white.

Bronze casting is a very specialised process involving many stages, and is therefore very time consuming. The artist has the dilemma of  keeping his costs down by making his own casts, but at the expense of his creative time. John chooses to have his bronzes cast by specialist foundries, which gives him more time for carving and working on his ideas.
